On 27 June 2024, the newly elected GLOHRA Steering Committee joined in a parliamentary event in Berlin, hosted under the patronage of Bundestag member Ruppert Stüwe. This event marked the release of a report evaluating Germany’s contribution to Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) research and included broader discussions on global health research.
The German government formalized its commitment to global health with the October 2020 publication of the German Strategy for Global Health Research and a recent interim review of the strategy. Initiatives such as the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) and the Global Health Hub Germany are evidence of this dedication.
The discussion on Germany’s engagement in global health was expertly moderated by Dr. Dr. Carsten Köhler, a Steering Committee member from Universitätsklinikum Tübingen. Prof. Dr. Beate Kampmann, Co-Director of the Charité Center for Global Health and GLOHRA Steering Committee member, articulated key points from recent GLOHRA position papers (see below). Prof. Kampmann emphasized the need for policies that promote interdisciplinary research and advocated for enhanced collaboration conditions with researchers in low- and middle-income countries. She also underscored the importance of engaging with stakeholders outside the health community, including economists, to bolster broader support for global health.
The event was co-hosted by GLOHRA, the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Deutsches Netzwerk gegen Vernachlässigte Tropenkrankheiten (DNTDs), Gesellschaft für Parasitologie (DGP), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Tropenmedizin, Reisemedizin und Globale Gesundheit (DTG), Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW), and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). We are grateful to the parliamentary members who attended and dedicated their energy and attention to this important topic.
